What Is a Chaste Tree Berry?

A chaste tree berry is a fruit from the chaste tree. A chaste tree is a shrub native to Asia and the Mediterranean that grows violets and berries. These berries are used to treat menstrual symptoms because of their beneficial properties. The berries contain flavonoids, progestins, and essential oils, all known to be helpful for the body. They have long been used in clinical trials where experts have tested their viability to help decrease the intensity of menstrual pains. Once the berries are collected from the chaste tree, they are turned into capsules for people to swallow for the benefits rather than eat.

How Does the Chaste Tree Berry Work?

The chaste tree berry may help stimulate progesterone, a hormone that is heavily involved with menstruation. Progesterone rises two weeks before menstruation begins, contributing to different effects over time as hormone levels rise and fall. When the chaste tree berry stimulates progesterone, it can cause hormone levels to be more balanced throughout the month, lessening more severe menstrual symptoms over time.

The chaste tree berry contains phytoestrogens, natural substances that mimic estrogen. That is something else that contributes to the chaste tree berry’s menopausal benefits. When estrogen levels in the body fall, it causes some of the worst of menopause symptoms, and chaste tree berries can lower those effects by giving your body a version of estrogen it can use to replace the natural loss of estrogen.

Chaste Tree Berry Benefits

The chaste tree berry reduces several major PMS symptoms. It helps with breast pain, headaches, mood changes, and more. But the effects of the chaste tree berry can be something that takes a while to really notice. It takes about two weeks for a user to notice a difference at all and up to three months to achieve the full effects of the chaste tree berry on your menstrual cycle.

Breast pain isn’t the most major period symptom, but it can still feel uncomfortable. Instead of feeling sore to the touch and feeling the heaviness of your breasts every time you move, when you take chaste tree berries, you can lessen that discomfort. Headaches are a symptom that can be debilitating, especially depending on their severity, and chaste tree berry supplements can definitely help with that. This supplement provides a lot of benefits when it comes to mood changes. Mood swings occur as a result of hormone fluctuations, something that the chaste tree berry helps to regulate. It will make going through your day a lot less tumultuous by evening out your moods. Other menstrual symptoms the chaste tree berry can help regulate include bloating, breakouts, and fatigue. Since all of these symptoms occur due to hormonal fluctuations, the chaste tree berry’s ability to even those out will affect every period symptom.

And even more surprising, the chaste tree berry is also known for improving fertility. It can help out with this when the cause of infertility has to do with the menstrual cycle since this berry can have huge effects on your cycle. The chaste tree berry can also help to reduce menopausal symptoms. This is because of the properties they contain that mimic estrogen. Menopause symptoms largely happen because of the decrease of estrogen in the body, so ingesting a substance that mimics estrogen will decrease some of the worst of the symptoms.

The chaste tree berry contains flavonoids, progestins, iridoids, and essential oils, each which comes with its own benefits. Flavonoids are an antioxidant that boosts the immune system and reduces damage done to cells. Consuming flavonoids on the regular will make a person overall less susceptible to illnesses. They are anticancer, antioxidant, and also have antiviral properties. Progestins are a man made form of progesterone, iridoids are a type of monoterpenoids that is found in plants and they have anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally they also contain essential oils to  reduce stress, clear fungal infections, and help you sleep.

Chaste Tree Berry Side Effects

The chaste tree has significant benefits, but also has side effects that you should look out for. When chaste tree berries aren’t overused, it may only result in relatively mild side effects. Those side effects include nausea, headaches, itching, and stomach issues. These effects can intensify if chaste tree berry is overused, but mostly don’t pose a problem with regular usage.

Chaste tree berries can have more significant side effects for certain users. For instance, taking chaste tree berries isn’t beneficial for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Since it has effects on the reproductive system, it is best that you avoid it when pregnant. And since nutrients pass from mom to baby through breast milk, it is best not to take it while breastfeeding either.

Another group that can be vulnerable to the effects of chaste tree berry is women with hormone-sensitive conditions. These conditions include breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer. While it has not been fully proven to be unsafe for these people, it is strongly suspected, making it best to avoid chaste tree berries when you have these conditions.

Chaste tree berries can have harmful interactions with certain medications, making it best to avoid it when you’re on certain medications. One medication chaste tree berry shouldn’t be taken with is birth control. Birth control shouldn’t be taken with the chaste tree berry because it affects the hormone levels in the reproductive system. Many birth control methods also affect these hormone levels, which is how they are able to prevent pregnancy. Chaste tree berry can undermine the effects of your hormonal birth control if taken alongside it, and you might end up with an unwelcome surprise. This plant based supplement can also be unsafe when taken with Parkinson’s drugs and drugs that are used to treat psychosis. If you’re interested in trying chaste tree berries and are on medication for any of these issues, you should talk to your doctor to get their point of view on it first.
