Does NMN Increase Estrogen?

Longevity has been a buzz word in recent years and has garnered quite the attention from those entering middle to late adulthood. Many will look to various methods to extend their lifespan via exercise- specifically strength training amongst women has been known to reduce risk of certain ailments, diet changes, and the big one: supplements.

Supplements have been storming the market and have had quite the grip on many looking to improve their lives. Whether it be through helping with their weight loss journey, managing their stress levels, reducing symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, repairing their sleep cycle, and increasing their chances of a longer, healthier life, there’s a little something for everyone in the supplement world.

One such supplement that’s been a popular choice for the aging populous has been NMN. NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) is advertised to do all sorts of wonderful things for your body and can be a great boon to “anti aging", but what about the things it does for you that may go unnoticed. Like for example, does NMN increase estrogen? Does it truly improve one’s lifespan? What exactly does it do for aging bodies? We’re going to break down this longevity supplement so you can get the answers you’re looking for.

  • What is NMN and How does it help the body?
  • Does NMN increase estrogen? How could that affect us?
  • Does NMN truly help with aging?
  • What’s the recommended way to take NMN and Where to get it

Dr. Emil knows that everyone’s body is different, what works for some, may not work for others. It’s all about finding the right balance for you. So keep that in mind as you read on about the NMN supplements and its effects on estrogen and the body.

What is NMN and How does it help the body?

We aren’t going to assume you know what NMN is, just that you’ve heard it can potentially be a great tool used for longevity and anti-aging, so what exactly is it and how does it provide tools that supposedly can extend our lifespan?

Well, NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) is one of the essential building blocks in making NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) which is a molecule, particularly a cellular coenzyme, that is a big part of process in cell production, growth, DNA repair, and your metabolism.

All of these functions decline as you get older, it’s not by any particular affliction- (though it can decline further with certain diseases, more on that in a second), it’s just the process of age. In fact it’s reported that NAD+ levels decline by 40-50% by the age of 50, so taking a supplement that can increase that production would be a good thing for those of a certain age bracket (or designated by a doctor).

Diseases like Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, cardiovascular conditions, and others of the same vein can cause even further NAD+ depletion. Researchers have seen multiple reports where this is evident and have even done trials that showthe use of NAD+ precursors can be another promising and sustainable option in PD treatment.

NMN isn’t just something that is produced in the body or made via supplement production, NMN is found in foods like broccoli, avocado, and cabbage, but just eating a lot of those foods isn’t going to be the “increase” you might be looking for as typically when it comes to these foods you’re only going to get milligrams at a time. That’s where the supplements can come in and bridge that gap.

Does NMN increase estrogen? How could that affect us?

Estrogen plays a vital role in everyone, not just females, but males too. Although mostly associated with females, estrogen is found in everyone and is one of two sex hormones that affects reproductive health, sex drive, puberty, fertility, the menstrual cycle, monopause, and other skeletal, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems like cholesterol and blood sugar levels, bone and muscle mass, circulation, and more.

There are three types of estrogen:

  • Estrone (classified as E1): This is the type of estrogen that’s made primarily after menopause.
  • Estradoil (classified as E2): This is the type that’s most prevalent during your “reproductive years” and the cause of the development of female secondary sexual characteristics like breasts, waist, and fat distribution.
  • Estriol (classified as E3): This is the type of estrogen that’s found during pregnancy.

So as you can see, estrogen is a big part of our lives, and low/high levels can impact a lot in a person’s body. Therein lies the question, does NMN supplements increase estrogen?

The short answer: No, at the moment of writing this, there is no clear link to NMN and increased estrogen in the body.

The longer answer you’re looking for: Current research indicates that NMN and NMN supplements will not increase your estrogen levels. It does however “improve estrogen receptor sensitivity” by activating sirtuins which helps your body’s natural estrogen receptors do their thing a bit more easily. So although it doesn’t increase your estrogen levels, taking NMN supplements can allow your body’s naturally-produced estrogen to work more efficiently.

There has been a study done on mice that showedsupplementing NMN helped improve the health of the ovaries, prevent ovarian atrophy (shrinkage), and enhance both the quality and number of eggs ovulated.” But since this was done on mice only, we don’t yet know if this will affect humans the same way. Talking to your doctor about your estrogen levels, and what effect you exactly want to see from potentially increasing them is going to be your best bet here as taking NMN supplements won’t help in terms of increasing your estrogen levels.

There are so many ways to impact aging in a beneficial way and specific supplements can be one of them.

Does NMN truly help with aging?

We know from multiple studies that increasing NAD+ levels improve lifespans and mitochondrial dysfunction, so it makes sense that we’d attribute that knowledge to adding a supplement that boosts NAD+ levels, right?

Well, as of right now there isn’t a ton of research regarding whether taking NMN supplements will effectively slow down the process of aging and promote longevity. NMN as a supplement is actually relatively new, so our knowledge on its long-term effects on our bodies is unknown without the correct studies and research done.

But what has been done has shown some positive results:

  • Taken orally, we’ve found that NMN supplementshas increased NAD+ biosynthesis, suppressed age-related adipose tissue inflammation, enhanced insulin secretion and insulin action, improved mitochondrial function, improved neuronal function in the brain, and more.”
  • Quite possibly the biggest positive we’ve seen from taking the supplements so far has been that over a course of 6 to 12 weeks has been its effects on muscular ameliorating (making muscles that were/are noticeably weak, bigger and stronger). Losing muscle mass and strength as we age is bound to happen, so having a supplement to help you with your regular exercise routine is amazing, especially when paired with an exercise regiment built for increasing the range of motion and strength in aging bodies.

What we’ve seen so far from early on-set trials has been promising and although Nicotinamide Mononucleotide isn’t a cure-all, and no large-scale and long-term studies have been done yet to monitor any potential positive/negaitve outcomes, the things we do know have been pointing us in an exciting outcome.

It is important for anyone who’s considering taking any kind of supplement or vitamin, not just NMN, to talk to your doctor or a trusted healthcare professional. Even more so if you are already taking a medication that could directly influence said supplement. By consulting a professional they can take in account current or future blood tests and give you the best advice on dosages tailored to your specific needs.

What’s the recommended way to take NMN and Where to get it

There are plenty of places where you can buy NMN supplements and one such reliable place is Dr. Emil Nutrition:

Bundles are great and a good beneficial bundle is even better, and that’s exactly what you’re getting from the NMN & Spermidine Healthy Aging Bundle which is pictured above. The NMN bottle contains 30 capsules for a thirty day supply, while the Spermaine bottle has 60 capsules, also for a thirty day supply.

NMN, as we’ve learned, helps with increasing NAD+ levels and has been proven to increase energy levels, suppress age-associated weight gain and support a healthy metabolism. Spermidine on the other hand is a name we don’t know yet, it is a polyamine and has been shown to increase the lifespanin yeast, nematodes, flies and mice.

Increasing your spermaine levels (which also decrease with age) can induce autophagy, a mechanism that allows for cell regeneration and renewal. But that’s not all, no, Spermidine also helps boost your immune system offering support you might need, and increases your cellular health. It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which can help aid in your metabolism and respiration.

What is the recommended way to take the NMN and Spermine supplement(s)?

  • The NMN supplement is recommended that you take one capsule daily, (preferably in the morning before eating a meal) with at least 8oz of water or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • With the Spermidine supplement, it is recommended to take two capsules once a day- (also in the morning before eating a meal and with at least 8oz of water), or as directed by a healthcare professional.

These two back-to-back or more accurately side-to-side can potentially lead to some great overall benefits in the body. Also available is the NMN & Resveratrol Healthy Aging Bundle which has its own set of benefits.

Does NMN Increase Estrogen?

No, NMN does not increase your estrogen levels, so if you are concerned about low-estrogen or are looking to find methods to increase yours, talk to your doctor first and foremost. Although NMN might help your body’s natural estrogen function with more efficiency, it does not affect the levels in your body. What it can do is help you increase your energy levels, suppress age-associated weight gain. It also contributes to supporting a healthy metabolism, the regulation of glucose metabolism, and lower levels of inflammation.
